I have a thing about grandparents, like they are just my favorite…. especially when they are with their grandchildren. I have written many times about my own grandfather, whom is no longer with us, but oh boy do I miss him, my other grandfather who is still with us ins’t doing so well, so I take my children to visit him as much as I can.
Weve been visiting with my grandfather in the nursing home lately. A few weeks ago he had a pretty intense stroke. To say he isn’t quite the same would be a truthful statement, but one that nobody really wants to admit. He’s in there though, the real him, the smile and the laughter.. we just have to find it, and pull it out of him. I can tell you the easiest way to do it… bring his great grand daughters around, and then… something changes. I say it all the time but this is a relationship I love to photograph. The youngest and the oldest….. they have something about them, this unspoken language, this bond, one that only they understand…. but we can see it, and its beautiful. We know our time with him is slowly slipping away so for now, we savor it, we embrace all that his life has, all that he has, and we cling to each moment, while we cling to our faith and each other. Knowing that someone wont be around forever is a reality of life, but one that nobody wants to face. Make the most of every moment you have, and please…. please… take photos of children and their grandparents.
Love on your grandparents or your childrens grandparents, visit them as much as you can, photograph them, listen to their stories so you can tell them again and again when they are gone.
Heather - Love this post, and it is so true. I love my grandparents dearly and can’t imagine a day when they won’t be here anymore. It reminds me that I need to take more photographs of me and them together, as well as some with my kids. perhaps if we are ever in Annapolis I will have you do some family photographs for us.
