Ive had the joy of photographing the D family since their tiny boys newborn portraits, Ive had the chance to capture some family sessions, and Amber has even come along to shadow me on a wedding once to see what the whole “Wedding photographer” thing was about!!! Its been fun to meet up with them every few months, see the boys grow, and capture new family memories!

This year to keep the boys attention during our session we went on a “dinosaur adventure” well let me tell you, I dont know much about dinosaurs and kids are hard to fool… so since we were on a beach, naturally we also became shark watchers, keeping a lookout for the notorious “Fin”, you know so that we could warn the others on the beach, except little boys think its funny to yell shark every 2.5 seconds when they are on a beach anyway.. so back to dinosaurs we went.

I take my own daughter on these “adventures” sometimes, where we explore through the woods and search for animals (mostly zoo animals). Sounds crazy right, except its so interesting to watch them as their imagination takes over and the wheels start turning when they are in control of the story. I do this often on Portrait sessions now too.. they get so caught up in their own story they dont realize the time that you have spent walking around the park, or the ridiculous spots you have had them stop to “pose” or as I like to tell them sometimes, the “secret hideout spot” .

Next time you want to photograph your own children, try stepping into their world instead of bringing them into your, let them be wrapped up in childhood imagination and just be there, ready to capture the excitement!
